We are students from the International Society of Wheelchair Professionals (ISWP) Student Group who work on design of assistive devices and wheelchair services. We are full-time students at University of Pittsburgh studying Rehabilitation Science & Technology and Bioengineering.
Currently, several discrepancies exist with wheelchair service provision in less resourced areas especially, with regards to wheelchair selection. Selection is based on clinician’s knowledge of chairs, orby which brand is currently most available and affordable by the user. There is a sincere lack of information on chairs that are standardized for outdoor environments. For provision of appropriate wheelchairs (WC), consumers and providers require better understanding of product quality, manufacturer’s specifications, availability and product reviews from users and clinicians. Availability of such information about WCs used in less-resourced settings through a web-based information portal is bound to assist in making informed choices during WC provision process.
Our idea is to construct an information portal providing comprehensive information on wheelchairs for wheelchair users, clinicians, manufacturers and other stakeholders in the wheelchair service sector.
We would like to get continuous support from the wheelchair service community in less-resourced settings for disseminating knowledge and best practices on wheelchairs.
Information for awareness on wheelchair products and services for making informed decisions during wheelchair provision.
