Cameron Norris and Charlie Ann Vine flew over from London to join the Enable Makeathon programme after spending 6 months building and evaluating existing open source prosthetics. Their goal is to create an open source electric powered prosthesis that has a genuine functional benefit for its users.
There is an estimated 2.4 million upper limb amputees in developing countries around the world, representing 80% of the entire global upper limb amputee population. In India alone, 23,500 people are added to the upper limb amputee population every year - and due to the large number of disabled patients in rural India, the government simply can’t provide enough funds to cater for them all. Bionics Without Borders seeks to provide people from disadvantaged communities across the globe access to functional, hygienic and environmentally friendly prosthetic devices that can be locally maintained and locally manufactured without the need of highly trained technicians.
