A Look Into Enable Makeathon 2.0


The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and its partners invite persons with disabilities, designers, engineers, humanitarians and entrepreneurs to join forces for ‘Enable Makeathon 2’ and develop affordable assistive solutions for persons with disabilities.

The Enable Makeathon 2.0 is an intensive innovation programme that takes place from November 2017 to January 2018. We enable innovators to translate their ideas into action by accompanying teams with fresh ideas from the ideation phase to the impact phase. Innovators benefit from an intensive co-creation camp with mentors, experts and makers to develop a solid business plan and prototypes. They have the possibility to win one of the three Enable Makeathon prizes to translate their idea into action.

Enable Makeathon co-creation camps and incubation will take place in two simultaneous locations; Bengaluru, India hosted by the ICRC and London, UK hosted by the Global Disability Innovation Hub and University College London.

The Enable Makeathon 2.0 consist of 6 phases

  • Challenge Assessment

    In a first phase we define 12 challenges that focus on people with disabilities who are hearing impaired, sight impaired or have a locomotor/physical disability.

  • Solution Crowdsourcing

    This is the phase when we call for solutions! The application process opens on 11th of. A panel of experts will then select 15 teams that will be invited to join phase three.

  • The Co-Creation Boot Camp

    This is the phase when we work together with participants, persons with disabilities, mentors, designers and investors to co-create 15 prototypes or solutions in 15 days! The co-creation camp will take place in Bengaluru and London.

  • Refinement and Testing

    During this phase, 10 selected teams will work together with the mentors to refine their prototypes and test it in the market before moving to the next phase.

  • The Event

    Of the 10 teams that make it to this point, three winners will be selected for the Incubator Innovation Fellow Grant to develop their solutions.

  • The Incubation

    It is during this phase that the winning solutions will be developed and supported through a one year Incubator Programme sponsored by ARTILAB.
